Kudremukh is most likely Karnataka’s best trekking experience, and that is quite a statement since there are so many trekking adventures available in the region. It is called by this name because of its resemblance to the face of a horse when viewed from some angles while trekking up its sides. What the Trek Actually Involves
Kudremukh is a moderate trek, which means you need decent fitness, but you don’t have to be a mountain athlete. The trail covers roughly 22 kilometres from the base at Mullodi village. Most people do it as a day trek starting super early, though some prefer splitting it over two days with camping.
You will start hiking early in the morning before sunrise. The first portion of the hike is through very dense forested areas and, therefore, is shaded from the sun. Additionally, while you are on the trail, the sounds of running streams will be nearby, and the songs of birds will be all around you as daylight appears.
Then the landscape shifts dramatically. You emerge onto these vast rolling grasslands that seem to go on forever. The grass waves in the wind, and the views open up completely. This section feels almost surreal, especially when mist rolls across the hills, creating that dreamy atmosphere.
The last climb to reach the top is rocky, with plenty of scrambling to get up. The climb is adventurous but not technically difficult. Because you are entering a national park, permits are necessary to visit Kudremukh. You will obtain these through the Forest Department. However, going with a registered trekking company makes obtaining your permits much easier. Solo trekking isn’t permitted by law.
The best trekking months run from October to February when the weather stays pleasant, and the grasslands look their greenest. Post-monsoon brings vibrant landscapes with streams flowing full, whilst winter offers clearer skies for summit views.
